Senior Citizen Tax Exemption

The Bremen Board of Education grants a $10,000 exemption off the assessed home value of senior citizens in the city of Bremen. In combination with the $10,000 granted by the state of Georgia, Bremen senior citizens are able to claim a $20,000 exemption off the assessed home value for school taxes. In order to receive the exemption, seniors must apply for it. The following criteria have to be met to qualify for the exemption:

Must be 62 years of age or older.
Income from both spouses cannot exceed $10,000 in the prior year. Income from retirement sources, pensions, or disability income is not counted in the $10,000 cap.
Income from all sources, including retirement sources, pensions, or disability income, for both spouses, cannot exceed the current social security maximum benefit for 2021 of $75,552 annually. This income limitation varies from year to year based upon the amount set by the federal Social Security Act.

In order to help explain this benefit for our seniors, consider the following example:

If a person owns a home in the City of Bremen that is assessed at $100,000, the 40% taxable assessed value would be $40,000 before applying the senior exemption. The school system's millage rate is 14.95, so that would be 40 x 14.95 = $598 in school taxes.

If the above criteria are met and $20,000 is deducted from the 40% taxable assessed value, the new taxable assessed value would be $20,000 instead of $40,000. Using the school system's millage rate of 14.95, the new school tax, after applying the senior exemption, would be 20 x 14.95 = $299. This scenario would yield a senior citizen a 50% savings in school property taxes.

In order to apply for this exemption, go to the Haralson County Tax Assessors office at 4266 Highway 120 in Buchanan. The phone number is 770-646-2022.

There is a form to complete. They will also need a copy of the applicant's driver's license, and proof of income. Examples of proof of income could be a copy of a paycheck, retirement check, social security check, etc.

In order to receive the credit, paperwork must be submitted by April 1st of each year for the exemption to apply to the next year's property taxes in the Fall.
