Mrs. Rogers’

Writing and Grammar

Class

General Information

In my classes this year we will be covering the five basic types of writing for fourth graders per the Georgia Performance Standards.  These include but are not limited to Narrative, Persuasive, Informational, Response to Literature, and Poetry.

We have started with Narrative Writing which is simply stories.  We work on developing characters, settings, and plots.  These stories can be fiction or non-fiction.   We have started the grammar off with good sentence structure including recognizing sentences and fragments, run-on sentences, the four types of sentences, subjects and predicates, simple sentences, compound sentences, complex sentences, paragraph writing, etc.

In November we will begin with nouns and cover common and proper nouns, singular and plural nouns, possessive nouns and pronouns.  We have moved persuasive writing back to January.

ROTATION

Students also have rotations in my class.  They rotate among 4 stations:

1.                Journal Writing with Prompts

2.              Sustained Silent Reading

3.              Centers from GPS

BOOK-N-IT

My connections classes are writing children’s picture books this year.  We are writing narratives and turning them into eight page picture books.  All illustrations are done by the students on a paint program.  For a culminating activity students will read their books to Pre-K students from Jones Elementary.

I also work with the Fourth and Fifth grade chorus and drama department.  We meet every Monday afternoon from 3:05 until 4:30.  The Christmas  program was excellent,  Check our some of the performance pictures below.
