Course Objectives: This course is designed to emphasize the connections among moments in history and trace the development of the American literary heritage.  Students will understand and appreciate major trends in culture, literature, and politics; understand how specific genres are important to specific periods; and identify thematic strands that trace through literature and the development of the American identity.

Honors American Literature

 

 

Text Box: Course Overview

This course is designed for advanced-level students planning on taking AP English.  Content, pacing, assignments, and delivery models are more demanding than college prep.  This course traces the history of American literature with a concentration on persuasive , literary analysis, conventions of grammar and usage, reading and interpreting a variety of literary genres using critical thinking strategies, speaking and listening activities, and vocabulary. In order to remain in the honors and AP program, students must maintain at least an 85 average. No plagiarism will be tolerated. Violations may result in expulsion from the honors program. Also, because the class is voluntary and sets forth a high standard of both academic and personal achievement, students who wish to enter and remain in the program should strive for good attendance, hold high standards of behavior, have a cooperative attitude and work ethic, and strive for excellence.
