Class News

 Aug. 1, 2006

Hello, students and parents. I am excited about meeting you on registration day and am looking forward to a wonderful year working with you! I hope you will visit our web site often in order to stay informed about what is happening in our class.

Make sure you go over the student handbook. There are some changes every year. A new system Wellness Policy is being implemented this year.

As you can see from the schedule, fifth graders have a morning break in the cafeteria. Students may bring a healthy snack and/or drink (no glass or cans). Please review the Wellness Policy in the handbook. Our lunch will be at 11:30 this year, so snack should not be heavy.

A very important means of communication between school and home is the yellow folder which will be sent home on Mondays. Graded work from the previous week will be included in this folder as well as newsletters, handouts, etc. There will be a place for parents to sign and comment on folder work. The signed folder is to be returned to school on Tuesday.

It is essential that each student complete daily assignments. I will provide an agenda folder in which students will be required to record homework. Parents should expect to see the agenda at home each night. Parents may also check this web site for my daily homework assignments. Remember that some of my students have another teacher for math. I plan to update these assignments every afternoon.

Textbooks are very expensive, so students must take proper care of them. I suggest that students cover all texts with fabric covers or covers made from brown grocery bags (no adhesive covers).

Our school will continue to collect Box Tops for Education, Tyson labels, and Campbell’s labels for Education.  Please support this by saving and sending these to school.

On registration day, I gave each parent a questionnaire to fill out. Remember to return these as soon as possible.

Aug. 14

Students are bringing home the yellow folder for the first time today. Please review the work inside, sign and date the form attached to the folder, and return the folder to school tomorrow. Fourth grade CRCT results are included in today’s folder. Keep this information for future reference.

I am sending home Scholastic book orders today. They will be due next Wed. I offer these to the students who are interested in ordering books. If you would like to purchase books, please send me the completed order form and check or cash in a labeled envelope.

Some students are still having difficulty remembering to get the agenda and reading log signed nightly. Please encourage them to bring this home daily. Assignments are written on the board for students to copy.

Sept. 11

We recently had our first Character Club meeting of the year. Information was sent home about the Presidential Service Award Program. This program is sponsored by the President of the U.S. to encourage volunteerism in our youth. Students must document community service activities and hours on the log sheet. At the end of the year, students with enough hours are recognized with a certificate signed by the President and a bronze, silver or gold pin.

Congratulations to our first Character Stars: Erin for Fairness and Dakota for Creativity.

We are Book Buddies with Mrs. Hembree’s Pre-K class. We look forward to meeting with them every other week.

Sept. 18

ITBS testing begins today and continues through next Monday. Tests will be given at 8:30 and 9:15 each morning. It is important that students are present for testing and on time for school. Please make sure that students get to bed on time and eat a good breakfast each day.

Congratulations to last week’s Character Star Zach for Enthusiasm.

Our class recently elected Student Council Homeroom Representatives. We will be represented by Ella and Taylor S.  Congratulations, Ella and Taylor!

Sept. 21

Parent-Teacher Conference information was sent home today. Conference day is Thursday, Oct. 12. I will have to schedule some conferences on alternate days in order to see everyone. If you would like to come earlier that week, please note that on your request form. I will be available from 2:14 until 4:30 on those days. Please return the form as soon as possible with three choices of times marked. I look forward to meeting with you.

Oct. 9

We had a great visit to Zoo Atlanta and the Cyclorama last week. We enjoyed watching the animals, as well as viewing the Cyclorama displays. Thanks to Mrs. Carollo, Mr. Gresham, Mrs. Green, Mrs. Hardie, Mrs. McKibben, Mrs. Quesada, and Mrs. Tisinger for helping to chaperone the trip. I can’t remember a field trip that went as smoothly!

Several of our class members participated in the recent election for Student Council officers. They all did a wonderful job on their campaign speeches. Congratulations to Jesse who tied for Student Council Secretary. That was a first! We have several other class members who will also be a part of Student Council this year. These students have to maintain good grades and conduct in order to participate.

Hats off to recent Character Stars - Carter, for Honesty, and Anna, for Gratefulness!

This Thursday is Conference Day. If you are unable to attend at the designated time, please let me know. Because of the number of parents scheduled and only 15 minutes allowed for each conference, I will not be able to meet with you if you are late. We will have to reschedule. Thank you for understanding.

Nov. 3

The fifth graders are wrapping up the CHAMPS classes with Officer Dees. Next Friday each student has to have two CHAMPS projects completed. They must complete an essay on what they have learned or why they want to be drug free, AND they must create a poster. We will work on the essay in class, but the poster must be completed at home. They must complete both in order to graduate. Graduation will be held on Friday, Nov. 17 at 9:00 AM in the cafeteria.
