Welcome to first grade. Hope you have a great year!
Language arts:
Phonics: rhyming words, sounds, blends, diagraphs, vowels, blending, phonics rules
Sight words
Journal writing:
Students have individual journals. They are working on writing paragraphs and illustrating them.
Spelling:
Students have 10 words on a spelling test each week. They learn about the word family for the week, and they practice writing the words for handwriting lessons, also.
Math:
Students are learning to set up addition and subtraction number sentences from real life applications. They will also be working on counting, fractions, pre multiplying, money, time, symmetry, pre algebra… They will have math homework most nights.
Weekends:
Huskey, the class pet, will be going home with a student for the weekend. A journal also goes home with him/her so that the student can write about his/her weekend with Huskey. Please return them on Monday so that the student can read his/her journal entry to the class.
Class meetings are held so that the students can resolve problems that they encounter throughout the day. Consequences that are related to the act are decided on by the class. The class also pays compliments to each other at the meetings.
Library day is Thursday. Books can be brought back from home before Thursday if the student finishes the book early.
Students may have a water bottle in class if it has a top that pulls up and goes down (no screw-on tops for desktops). This kind of bottle isn’t so likely to spill all over the student’s work if it turns over on the desk.
Your students are working hard!!
Thanks for your help at home.
